Oberto Out for Seafair?
Not Yet
The Oh Boy! Oberto was the
first hydro out on
the water in Seattle for a qualification run Friday. The
promising run was ended quickly, however,
when a blade came off of the 3-blade
prop.
The insuing vibrations
caused serious damage to the bottom of the hull. The Bud team came forward
and offered the Oberto the use of their Seattle shop for repairs. The Oberto
team is working feverishly and hope to return to the pits before race time
on Sunday. Let's wish the crew the best of luck in getting the boat repaired
in time!
Miss
Rock, Presented by Silver Dollar Casinos, Returns to Seattle
For 15 years during
the 1980s and early 90s, Seattle radio station KISW (99.9 FM) presented the
Miss Rock unlimited hydroplane during races in the Tri-Cities and during
Seafair. But since 1995, KISW has been out of the sport, and it has been
missed.
“J-Dub” Qualifies
Thanks to Muscatel, Leland
J.W. Myers, a veteran of the limited
ranks has become the newest driver on the HydroProp unlimited hydroplane
circuit, thanks to Ken Muscatel and Fred Leland.
On Friday (7/25) in Tri-Cities, Muscatel allowed Myers to drive his boat during
an afternoon testing session. Myers completed seven of the 10 laps he needed
to be qualified as an unlimited driver. Shortly before Myers went out, Muscatel
told him that if there was time when he got back, he could go drive Leland’s
Miss Tony Roma’s as well. Myers’ speeds on the seven laps he completed
in the Silver Dollar Casinos presents Miss Rock were: 140.818, 142.877, 146.580,
145.800, 143.401, 133.558. HydroProp officials confirmed his first lap was
also over 130, but the exact numbers were not reported. Less than an hour later,
in Leland’s boat, Myers ran laps of 140.796, 142.515 and 144.048 to become
qualified as an unlimited driver. His reward: He was appointed driver’s
representative for the Columbia Cup. Myers again drove Leland’s boat
in heat 3B, finishing fifth after jumping the gun and being penalized a lap.
He’s expected to either drive Leland’s main boat in Seattle, or
a possible second entry in the General Motors Cup.

Bumper boats crash Seafair
After
so much bumping and bashing during the Tri-Cities hydro race Sunday, the
usual pristine Miss Budweiser looked like a cherry-red accordion. Rival
driver Terry Troxell called it "full-contact boat racing."

Mark Evans claims 10th win in return
Even
though Mark Evans had been away from hydroplane racing since 2000, he did
