Accident on Final Lap of 4A!
As
the Llumar battled the Miss Chrysler Jeep for first place,
Llumar's lane disappeared, leaving driver Theoret no place
to go but through Miss Chrysler's roostertail. The first photo
below shows the U-3 Miss Chrysler, driven by Jimmy King, taking
the boat through turn 4 of the final lap. If you look closely,
you will see a second roostertail inside of the U-3. That is
Llumar's roostertail.
This
photo below shows Llumar just after they broke through
the roostertail. The right sponson exploded as it came
through.

Below, damage to the sponson.

*1 lap penalty
for arriving at score-up buoy early
Heat 2B looked
to be one of the best-matched heats of the weekend. The U-6 Oberto
needed a win to catch up on the points lost in Heat 1A. Myers
and the Elam still had a bone to pick with the mighty Detroit
River. Mike Weber, in the newly acquired Formula U-5 hot seat,
had something to prove. The U-2 Miss DYC, with the young J. Michael,
had hung on in their earlier heat and came to race.
As the 4 boats
lined up for the start, it was DYC on the inside, Elam in 2,
Oberto in 3, and Formula in 4. The 2, 16, & 6 quickly pulled
ahead of the U-5 and the battle for first was on. By lap 2, the
U-2 DYC had fallen behind leaving David in the Oberto and Myers
in the Elam to fight for the finish. And fight they did. Right
up to the back stretch of the last lap, when the U-16 Elam
caught some air in front of the Detroit Yacht Club again and
looked as if they would repeat their performance from Friday.
But this
time,
J.W.
backed
off,
allowing
the nose
of the Elam to land, but giving the lead for the final time to
David and the Oberto team. David and Myers hugged and congratuated
one another faollowing the heat.

*hooked in
turn 4 and missed a buoy just before the start
The boats
lined up for the start without the U-3 Miss Chrysler. Having
lost a blade to their prop in Heat 1A, they withdrew from this
heat due to the need for more repairs. Muscatel and the U-25
tried
some warm up laps, but went dead in the infield prior to the
start. This left a 3 boat field.
The Llumar, with Canadian driver Jean Theoret, quickly pulled
ahead of the U-13 with veteran driver Terry Troxell. Theoret
settled into a comfortable lead and went on for the win. Troxell
took second and Hopp in the 100 took third.

Heat 1B saw
the repaired U-16 take to the water. At the start, the U-2 Miss
DYC was in lane 2 with U-16 in lane one. J. Michael Kelly pushed
the U-2 to keep up with Elam. But even without the cowling, Elam
was able to pull out in front and maintain the lead til the finish.
The U-13, driven by Terry Troxell, took 3rd in their first race
of 2005. Muscatel in the U-25 finished 4th after repeatedly going
dead in the water. Heat

*jumped the
gun, 1 lap penalty
Heat 1A
was off to an awesome start with all 5 boats going into the
Roostertail turn together. But the 3 & the 5 were a little
over anxious and hit the start early, earning a 1 lap penalty.
That left the door open for the U-6 Oberto and the U-8 Llumar
to duke it out for the lead. On lap 2, Oberto lost a gearbox
coming out of turn 4 and went dead in the water. The U-100
went on to take second place. The U-3 lost a blade on their
prop and did not finish. The U-5 finished 3rd. Elam
