Heat 1B should have been a 4 boat heat, but Jim Harvey's U-2 Graham Trucking was not able to start. The U-3, driven by Jimmy King, lead wire to wire. Second place went to U-5 Formula Boats, driven by Dick Lynch. The U-100 Remax (Leland Racing) with Greg Hopp failed to finish.

Heat 1A kicked off the 2005 season. Under the rules of the ABRA, the lanes would not be assigned allowing the drivers to jockey for lanes. U-6 Oh Boy! Oberto, driven by Steve David, U-8 Llumar Window Films with Jean Theoret, and the U-16 Miss Elam Plus with J. W. Myers took to the water. David landed lane 1, lane 2 went to Elam, and Theoret, as the rookie, had lane 3. Elam went down just after the start of the race. Myers was able to restart the boat, but not before the other 2 boats had a sizable lead. Oberto ran out in front for lap one but was overtaken by Llumar in lap 2. Theoret managed to hold the lead and secure his first-ever win in his first ride in an unlimited hydroplane!
